Clinton Highway Chase: Bullets Fly, Vehicles Crash, Six People Injured

Posted on Sep 30, 2012

A high-speed car chase in Sampson County has resulted in injuries to six people—but not before gunplay and a traffic accident involving two vehicles just within Clinton’s city limits.

According to Clinton Police Chief Jay Tilley, an argument at a “backyard club” in the early morning hours of Monday, September 3, led to a high-speed chase along N.C. Highway 24.

In the lead was an Acura Legend, pursued by a white Pontiac.

Around 4:30 a.m., the chase came to an abrupt end just inside the Clinton city limits, at the Westover Road intersection. The lead vehicle—the Acura—smashed into the rear of a Ford F-150 pickup truck that was not involved in the chase. The impact thrust the truck into a utility pole; that collision flipped the truck on its side.

The Acura, which was severely damaged in the collision, was unable to drive away. Then the Pontiac pulled up and began exchanging gunfire with the occupants of the Acura. The driver of the Pontiac fled before police arrived.

The impact on the utility pole caused an electrical blackout for a wide area. Power was restored by noon.

The couple in the pickup truck, later identified as Ray and Cassandra Cuvilje of Harrells, were taken to Sampson Regional Hospital with injuries. Mr. Cuvilje was released after being treated, but his wife had sustained more serious injuries in the Clinton traffic collision. She was transferred to WakeMed, where her condition was listed as critical.

Four other occupants of the Acura Legend were also being treated at Sampson Regional. Two of them had received gunshot injuries.

Police say they are still looking for the driver of the Pontiac. They say that the State Bureau of Investigation is helping with the case.

“We are seeking the people that were involved in the other vehicle that we have seized. We hope to have some answers in a few days,” Chief Tilley told reporters.

The staff and personal injury attorneys of Speaks Law Firm wish Ms. Cuvilje a quick and thorough recovery from her injuries.
